What Kind of Temperatures you Can Expect in February

Many areas have been through quite a few ups and downs during the month of January where the forecast was concerned. February also holds a few surprises which will put some of you well below-average and a few of you with close-to or above-average temperatures.

Here’s what you can expect during the month of February as we draw closer to Springtime.

Northern Plains & Upper Midwest

If you live in the northern Plains or upper Midwest, you’ll experience colder-than-average temperatures throughout the month of February. Temperatures have started out mild, but there will be a quick shift back to colder temperatures. The jet stream over the eastern part of the United States will dip over the West. This will warm up the East while bringing colder temperatures to those in the Western parts of the United States.

The weakening of the polar vortex which is now well into 30 days may allow cold air to become trapped further north – strengthening the vortex and keeping the coldest air over the northern Plains and in the Midwest. Temperatures could be well below zero in the evening throughout the month of February.

Pacific Northwest and Desert Southwest

Temperatures in the South are generally around the 60s and 70s, for southern Florida, seeing some instances of temperatures in the 80s is possible. The slightly above-average temperatures off to the West are expected to result in mild and warm temperatures for the Pacific Northwest and Desert Southwest. Average highs during the month of February will be around 40 degrees for the Pacific Northwest and in the 70s for the Desert Southwest.

Looking at the United States as a whole, most of us will experience below average temperatures as we draw closer to Spring. Very few states will see temperatures slightly above average and no states should expect to see any major warming trends in the weather. Unlike the well-below-average temperatures caused by the polar vortex, no one will see well-above-average temperatures throughout the country for the entire month of February.

Let’s hope for some warmer weather once we get through February. Spring weather is sure to find a big welcome from all of us after the crazy temperatures throughout January and colder air in February.
