The threat of more flooding is starting to increase as Winter Storm Petra brings more rain to the South and Ohio Valley. Multiple areas are already under flood warnings and advisories with more rain on the way through the weekend.
Flood risks will increase this week in Nashville, Tennesee; Jackson, Mississippi; Birmingham, Alabama; Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
A few areas in Alabama, as well as a large band across Tennesee, is expected to get rainfall amounts ranging from 5 to 8 inches. Localized rainfall of up to 10 inches is not out of the question for these areas.
Excessive rainfall early Wednesday will affect far northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas which will head into western Tennessee and southwestern Kentucky. Rain could fall as quickly as 1 to 2 inches per hour which will be the main areas of concern for flash flooding and/or river flooding through the end of the week.
Rivers are already swelling and at minor or moderate flood levels from heavy rain earlier this month. This includes some rivers in the lower Ohio Valley and mid-Missippi Valley. These areas should be prepared for potential river flooding as the gauges are already showing the signs of flooding potential.
Safety Tips: If you encounter a roadway covered in water – do not attempt to drive through. Ensure that you stay alert and up-to-date on the current flooding situations in these areas and be especially aware in areas prone to river or flash flooding.
