Winter Storm Maya has already caused travel issues for residents of Des Moines, Iowa, and Kearney, Nebraska, as well as the surrounding areas. This morning, the snow, sleet, and freezing rain will bring travel concerns for the Midwest and Northeast. Winds could cause additional issues in the upper Midwest and northern Great Lakes on top of the expansive snow mess and ice.

Warnings and Watches

Parts of the upper Midwest from Iowa to Michigan are already under winter storm warnings. Maya has also prompted warnings in the Northeast from the West Virginia Panhandle to Pennsylvania, upstate New York, New England, and northwestern New Jersey.

Ice storm warnings have been issued from southeastern Michigan to northwestern Ohio. As with all ice events, power outages could occur as a result of heavy ice. Icing could lead to tree damage and power outages. Winter weather advisories are in effect for parts of the Plains, as well as, parts of the Midwest to the southern Great Lakes. This includes Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul and parts of the central Appalachians to the Northeast, including Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.

What to Expect Through Tonight

Today there will be widespread snow and strong winds. This will impact the upper Midwest and northern Great Lakes. For the southern Great Lakes, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, New England, and New York, a wintry mix of freezing rain, snow, and sleet will make for messy roads and travel concerns.

Philadelphia can expect the wintry mix to change over to rain during the day with heavy snow continuing through this evening for upstate New York and most of northern New England. Heavy snow will also continue through this evening around the western and northern Great Lakes.

The Midwest is expected to see at least 6 inches of snow. Some areas of New York’s Adirondacks into northern New England could see more than a foot of snow. Boston is expected to get a few inches before the winter mix turns to rain.
