‘Death Ridge’ On the Way For Southeast?

A dangerous heat wave dubbed a “Death Ridge” by one expert may be on the way for the Southeastern US this weekend. Temperatures are expected to skyrocket to the upper 90s to low 100s from Alabama to Virginia. Temperature records for May could be shattered.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue dubbed the conditions as a “death ridge” due to the fact that the Southeast will experience little to no wind and bone-dry conditions during the weekend. In meteorological terms, a “ridge” is an area of atmospheric pressure that prevents clouds, and thus rain, from forming. The Southeast has already seen warmer than average temperatures so far in May. Despite it being Memorial Day weekend, a time of outdoor activities, southeasterners are encouraged to minimize their time outside this weekend. This heat wave could be life-threatening if residents don’t take proper precautions when spending time outdoors.

To stay safe during this heat, experts generally recommend that people minimize their time outdoors, especially during the hottest times of the day. Drink plenty of water, and be sure to wear light, loose-fitting clothing if you must spend an extended period of time outdoors.
