Thunderstorms and Showers Expected Across Northeast on Friday

The Northeastern US has only had a short break from wet weather, and now it looks like that break is coming to an end on Friday. Rain and thunderstorms are forecasted to return to the northeast.

The Forecast

On Thursday evening, some areas on the western side of the Appalachians experienced showers and windy thunderstorms.

The primary threats on Friday come from damaging winds and small hail, but luckily for the Northeast, the problems won’t be as widespread as what the South Central US saw earlier this week.

Albany and Binghamton, New York; and Scranton and Allentown, Pennsylvania are the regions most at risk on Friday according to meteorologists with Accuweather.

Safety

Forecasters urge caution for any travel along the interstates Friday afternoon, as wind gusts and flooding increase the risk of traffic accidents. It is advised for travelers to slow down to avoid the risk of hydroplaning. Downpours resulting in decreased visibility can happen in just a few moments, so motorists should stay tuned to their local weather stations for new information.

With traffic potentially higher than usual due to Mother’s Day weekend, travelers are urged to drive defensively and be prepared for rain and flooding.

A Cool Mother’s Day Weekend

The showers and storms will cool off the region in time for Mother’s Day weekend. The highs on Saturday are expected to be 10 to 15 degrees lower than on Friday. Sunday may even be cooler than Saturday with highs only reaching the 50s. Normally, high temperatures this time of year in the northeast are in the lower 70s.

Otherwise, the weekend in New England should be mostly dry.

Mid-Atlantic States Affected on Sunday

States in the Mid-Atlantic region are likely to see rain on Sunday, with flooding possible in low-lying areas.
