Flooding came heavy and hard to Indiana, Kentucky, and the Ohio Valley over the weekend, many parts of which are still in a flash flood warning until Tuesday. A mudslide was even seen in Ohio, causing residents in the area to be evacuated until further notice.
A mother and two children in Kentucky were saved by water teams acting quickly after their car was swept off a bridge this weekend, taking a whole family along with it. The father, Jorge Luis Cantu Jr of Shelbyville of the family was trapped in the vehicle and unable to be rescued from the vehicle, and his body was recovered early Monday. The mother and two young children were both found outside of the vehicle, clinging to shorelines but miraculously alive and safe.
Near the Indiana border in Harrison Township, Ohio, over 30 people were asked to evacuate their homes after heavy rainfall caused a mudslide just outside their back doors. The residents of the apartment building affected stated that they had small issues with a potential mudslide in December, but the heavy rains in the past few weeks have made the issue so much worse. After the intense storm last night caused a large chunk of dirt and yard to slide down a ravine, residents were told the building was no longer stable.
As the ground was moved, utility lines in the area were exposed, putting anyone in the area at serious risk. Those residing in the affected areas were allowed to return to their homes to gather some belongings, but a ‘Condemned’ sign now sits on the locked front door on the complex leaving residents to wonder if and when they can return to their homes. Nothing can be done until an engineer accesses the damage to the utility lines and potential damage to the foundation of the complex.
According to weather experts, a storm front as basically stalled over Indiana and Ohio, dumping a significant amount of rain onto the area in a small period of time. Instead of moving on and decreasing in intensity, the stall means that this storm is just sitting and spinning, continually hitting the same spots.
More rain is expected in the coming days for the states most affected this weekend. Already full creekbanks and rivers from the previous storms mean that more flooding could be in store.
