Flash floods are possible in the Plains, Midwest and South this week as more rounds of rain and thunderstorms move through the region. Many rivers and waterways are already in the flood stage, meaning dangerous flooding is possible as more rain accumulates.
The month of May saw record rainfall for large swaths of the nation, especially affecting the Plains and Midwest states. Some of the cities most heavily affected include Wichita, Kansas, with 8.07 inches above average, Kirksville, Missouri, with 10.79 inches above average, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, with 7.08 inches of rainfall above average. Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas are the states that have been hit the hardest with above average rainfall totals for May.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to return to the region early in the week. Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected for the central and southern Plains and into the Mississippi River Valley. The rainfall and scattered storms are expected to last into Wednesday. Residents of these regions should pay attention to flash flood alerts and warnings and be prepared to evacuate to higher ground if necessary.
