DNA and genetic genealogy are becoming ‘major’ game-changers in decades-old cold cases. DNA has been used in the criminal justice system for over 30 years, and according to law enforcement officials, over a thousand people have been released from prison after being accused of crimes they did not commit. According to a study done in 2014, it is estimated that about 4% of people still on death row right now are actually innocent.
