DNA has been used in the criminal justice system for over 30 years, and over a thousand people have been released from prison after being accused of crimes they did not commit. Between January 1, 1989, and April 12, 2015, 1,579 people have been released from prison after DNA evidence proved them not guilty of the crime.
According to a study done in 2014, it is estimated that about 4% of people still on death row right now are actually innocent, which is 4% too many as far as anyone should be concerned. Can you imagine spending your life facing a death sentence for a crime you didn’t commit?
