A nor’easter could slam the entire East Coast this weekend putting a damper on travel from Georgia to Maine, bringing coastal rain and interior snow; plus, more of today’s weather news and forecast.

Nor’easter could arrive Friday through Sunday

A storm is expected to gather strength in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday and move northward through the weekend, impacting a large swath of the Eastern United States.

Forecasters are calling for coastal rain with the risk of flooding, as well as interior snow. The storm is also anticipated to create travel delays which may put a damper in the Super Bowl weekend and/or Groundhog’s Day for some people.

The storm is expected to impact states as far south as Alabama and Georgia, as well as the northeastern tip of Florida, and span the Eastern US northward all the way to Maine.

To the interior, the width of the storm is expected to extend as far west as Indiana, as well as to central Tennessee and most of Kentucky.

Forecasters say it’s a bit too early to get an accurate estimate of snow accumulation amounts, but suffice to say that interior snow is likely.

Powerful 7.7 earthquake in the Caribbean led to temporary evacuations in Miami

On Tuesday, a powerful magnitude 7.7 struck in the Caribbean, south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica, according to the US geological survey.

The quake led to temporary evacuations in Miami due to shaking, and a tsunami threat had been issued, but the danger has now passed. Miami police said the shaking was strong enough that some buildings were evacuated.

The strength of the quake and waves of up to 3 feet prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami threat for Belize, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico, the Cayman Islands, and Jamaica, but later said that the danger had passed.
