A large winter storm and colder polar air are coming to the northern and eastern US late this week, following a pair of quick striking storms in the northern tier today and tomorrow; plus, more of weather news and today’s forecast.

Polar Vortex will bring cold air to Northern and Eastern US

Cold air courtesy of a polar vortex will send temperatures plummeting beginning Wednesday, becoming more widespread on Thursday.

Temperatures up and down the eastern seaboard have ranged some 15 to 30 degrees above normal, delivering highs that ranged from 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. A shift in the jet stream is about to change all that.

A polar vortex will weaken and stretch, allowing cold air from Canada to shift southward into the northern tier and eastern half of the country sending temperatures plummeting.

On Wednesday, the north-central US will experience a strong drop in temperatures that will feel between -20 to -30 degrees in some areas. The cold air spreads into the Northeast on Thursday, a day ahead of a large winter storm that arrives on Friday.
