The strongest winter storm this season will develop early today in the Plains and travel eastward over the weekend, as it drops a heavy payload of ice and snow; plus, more snow out West and today’s weather forecast.

Strong winter storm strikes today, continues through the weekend

A strong winter storm will ultimately deliver sleet, freezing rain, ice, and snow to a large chunk of the US beginning today and through the weekend.

This will affect states from Oklahoma to Maine. Snowfall is also forecast for much of the northwest. Flash flooding will also be a major concern in a large portion of the central US.

Expect air and ground travel to be disrupted or delayed in the Midwest.

The northern tier and Upper Midwest will feel the most impact overall, where winter storm warning is in effect, as this storm holds the potential to be one of the most impactful winter storms to arrive this season, especially for the North-Central US.

What to expect on Friday:

A large portion of the Central Plains and the Upper Midwest will experience sleet, freezing rain, and snow.

Snowfall forecast for portions of North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania. Locally heavy snow is forecast for a large swath of Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as portions of South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois.

Freezing rain is forecast for portions of Oklahoma, Iowa, northern Arkansas, the northern Virginias and most or all of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.

Heavy rain and flash flooding are possible in portions of northern Arkansas, and the southern portions of Missouri and Illinois.

Snowfall for the Western US

To the West and Northwest, snowfall is forecast for much of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, northern Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. A wintry mix is in store for western Washington and Oregon, Northern California, southern Utah, northern Arizona, southern Colorado, and northern and central New Mexico.
