Winter Weather Advisories to the North, Severe Weather to the South

There’s a flurry of activity in the weather across the US today, with snow extending from Idaho to Maine across the northern tip of the country prompting winter weather advisories, with a wintry mix in the middle, and severe thunderstorms and potential flooding spanning from Texas to the Virginias; plus more of today’s weather news and forecast.

Snow will span across the northern US

Almost the entirety of the northern region of the country will see snow today, spanning from Idaho to Maine and dipping down into the Southwest in New Mexico.

Snow is forecast for almost the entirety of the states of Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Snowfall will occur also in portions of Idaho, Montana, and Utah, North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, New Mexico, and potentially in a small section of Northeast Nevada and Northwest Kansas.

Severe thunderstorms and flooding across the South

Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and the risk of flash flooding are forecast to span from Texas to the Virginias today and will be particularly severe in some areas.

The National Weather Service is warning of heavy rain and possible flash flooding for the following areas: Texas, east of Dallas; northern Louisiana; southern, central, eastern and northeast Arkansas, northern Mississippi, northern Alabama, northwest Georgia, most of Tennessee, all of Kentucky, southern Ohio, western West Virginia; western North Carolina and western Virginia.

A high risk of severe thunderstorms is possible for the following areas: central and northern Mississippi and Alabama, northwest Georgia, as well as middle and eastern Tennessee.

Wintry mix from the central US to Northeast

A wintry mix will span half of the country, just below the north, and just above the thunderstorms happening in the South.

Mixed precipitation is forecast for central and northern Oklahoma; most of Kansas, eastern Nebraska; all of Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania; as well as southern New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, southern New Hampshire and along the coast of Maine.
