Crime does go up in summer. Most robberies are opportunistic in nature. Contrary to popular belief, thieves mainly go to work during daylight hours, not in the dark of night.

Vacation time is the ideal time for thieves to smash and grab, even just a long day trip, or a weekend excursion. When you leave, double-check that all of your windows are shut, locked, and bolted if possible. Check to make sure that the backdoor is locked. If you haven’t already done so, invest in double bolts for all of your doors.

Don’t leave windows open if you’re not in the room just to let in a little breeze. When you come back you can put fans in your windows, but you can’t un-rob your house.

If you enjoy working outside, don’t leave your valuables unattended, even for a short run inside to get more lemonade. A thief can grab an expensive laptop or phone in seconds.
