Potent Polar Vortex Blast Coming to US by End of Week

Some major chill is coming to the US early next week as frigid air from the polar regions will spill over and deliver an icy blast for a large swath of the United States as the polar vortex arrives at the end of the week.

Polar vortex arrives end of week, impact early next week

Weakening winds will allow frigid air from the Arctic to spill out from the polar regions and make its way to the United States, arriving by the end of the week and delivering its impact early next week, Mashable reports.

The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Weather Prediction Center tweeted: “UPDATE: Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and has declared 6 more weeks of Winter. Maybe he took a peek at the low temperature forecast for next Monday.”

The post included a graphic of the minimum temperature forecast for the US for Monday, February 8, 2021. The image shows that temperatures for the entire United States, including Florida, will be affected, with temperatures dipping below normal.

Who will see the biggest impact?

According to the forecast map by the NWS, portions of the northern Rockies, upper Midwest, Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic will see the biggest impact.

Northern Rockies: Parts of Montana will see temperatures between -1 and -8 degrees. Wyoming will fall to 1 degree.

Upper Midwest: North Dakota will see temperatures ranging between -12 and -22 degrees. South Dakota will be between -2 and -8 degrees. Minnesota will see temperatures ranging between -17 and -28 degrees. Wisconsin will see temperatures ranging between -12 and -16. Northern Michigan will hit -11 degrees.

Midwest: Iowa between -11 and -17 degrees. Nebraska -3 degrees. Kansas will be between 8 and 11 degrees. Missouri will be between 8 and 4 degrees.

Ohio Valley: Expected lows are: northern Illinois -8, central -4, southern 4 degrees. Indiana -4, Ohio will fall to 0 degrees.

Mid-Atlantic: western Pennsylvania 2 degrees.

Mid-South: West Virginia 5 degrees, Kentucky 4, Tennessee between 9-11 degrees.

Other regions feeling the chill

Low temperatures will even reach the southernmost areas of the United States. While not as drastic as the temperature dips in the northern regions, southern latitudes in the US will also be feeling the chill.

Northwest lows: Washington 24 degrees, Oregon 21, northern California 21, Idaho 21, southern Montana between 11 and 14, Wyoming between 13 and 1 degree.

Western lows: central California 37, Southern California 48, Nevada 19, Utah 12, Colorado will be between 9 and 13 degrees.

Southwest lows: Arizona 20, New Mexico 25, extreme western Texas 28.

South-Central lows: Texas between 25 and 29 degrees.

Southern lows: Arkansas 19, Louisiana 28, Mississippi 18, Alabama 19, Georgia 18, South Carolina 23, Florida between 28 and 31 degrees.

Southeastern lows: North Carolina 17, Virginia 8 degrees.

Eastern lows: Washington, D.C. 16, New Jersey 15 degrees.

Northeastern lows: Connecticut 16, Massachusetts 13, New York City 19, Vermont 13, New Hampshire 18, Maine 14 degrees.
