Throughout Friday and Saturday, Winter Storm Maya will pound the Pacific Northwest with even more snow. After that, it will move on to the Plains, Midwest, and East over the weekend and into next week.
Just after Winter Storm Lucian hammered Seattle and Portland, Oregon with snow, they’ll be getting more from Maya. Over 200 flights were canceled at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport due to Winter Storm Lucian.
The Seattle metro area, as well as parts of Montana and California, are now under winter storm warnings issued by The National Weather Service. They have also issued winter storm watches in parts of Washington state, Idaho, Oregon, and western Montana. We expect these watches to be upgraded to warnings quickly as the storm moves through these areas.
If your area gets upgraded to a warning from a watch, expect dangerous driving conditions, heavy snow, and gusty winds.
Snowfall will be widespread and will hit most of the west. This includes lower elevations such as Seattle and Salt Lake City. The snow could go as far as western Oregon as it moves across the Interstate 5 corridor. Parts of Seattle could get as much as 6 inches of snow with lighter snowfall in parts of Oregon, including Portland and Willamette Valley.
For northwestern California, elevations as low as 500 feet could see snowfall. Multiple feet of snow is expected in the Sierra Nevada area including areas as low as 3,000 feet elevation. Utah’s Wasatch and Uinta mountains to Idaho’s Sawtooth and southern Bitterroot area can expect at least 5 inches of snow.
By late Sunday, snow, freezing rain and sleet could spread across the Midwest from eastern Kansas Though Missouri and into the Ohio Valley. The storm could stick around as late as Wednesday of next week. Stay tuned for updated snowfall amounts through the week.
