Blizzard and Storm Warnings Through Mid-Week

Spring is desperately trying to break through, but more weather events are causing havoc including blizzard and storm warnings for multiple areas. The new storm system has been named Winter Storm Ulmer and he’s not only bringing snow but high winds as well.

The combination of high winds and snow always leaves the threat of being faced with a blizzard.

Happening Now

There is a jetstream near California that will collide with another jetstream in the Northeast by today. Once they meet in the West, a strong area of low pressure will form causing travel concerns. The high winds and snow expected from the storm have already caused multiple blizzard warnings to be issued.

Blizzard warnings include parts of the central High Plains which will see the most from Winter Storm Ulmer. The areas under current warnings include not only the central High Plains but areas from northeastern Colorado into southwestern Wyoming. The Nebraska Panhandle is also under blizzard warnings which include Cheyenne, Wyoming and Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

Winter weather advisories and warnings are also in effect for parts of northeastern Colorado, eastern and southern Wyoming, western Nebraska, South Dakota, and northwest Kansas. Other parts of the West such as the Cascades, Southern California mountains and the Rockies are also under winter storm warnings.

Ground Blizzard conditions due to high winds blowing snow which decreases visibility have prompted a blizzard warning for northwestern Montana’s Rocky Mountain area.

What to Expect on Tuesday

Snowfall will continue over the Northwest and Four Corners region during the day. In the evening, the snow will head to the Rockies followed by winds in the Plains and Southwest.

Some freezing rain is possible in the upper Midwest if temperatures do not increase prior to the rainfall.

What to Expect on Wednesday

By Wednesday, Ulmer will have reached its highest point of potential damage. The low-pressure system will have strengthened causing snow and high winds. Areas affected include the northern and central Plains along with the Rockies. Blizzard conditions are most likely to form where the wind and snow meet in the Plains.

Be advised of travel concerns, especially for those traveling the Interstate 25 corridor and Interstate 70 from Colorado to northwestern Kansas. Keep your eyes on Interstate 80 as well in western Nebraska and Wyoming for potential closures and ill-advised travel routes.
