Citizens of Jefferson City, Missouri are waking up to decimated streets and homes this morning on behalf of a tornado that ripped through the city late Wednesday night. There are several reports of major roof damage, snapped powerlines and light poles, and completely stripped trees. Some are comparing the sight to a war zone.
The damage resulting from this tornado spanned about a 3-square-mile area of Jefferson City. The streets of Jefferson City are littered with various debris, including insulation, roofing shingles, and metal pieces. According to radar estimates, debris from the “wedge” tornado was suspended up to 13,000 feet in the air and may have been falling out northeast of the city.
This tornado was part of a severe weather outbreak that’s been tormenting the Plains and Midwest for multiple days, resulting in the death of at least eight people and causing extensive flooding throughout the areas.
No casualties have been reported in Jefferson City, but nineteen people have been treated at the various hospitals in the area.
An estimated report of about 30 tornadoes was reported in the band between Oklahoma to Illinois on Wednesday alone. The exact number of tornadoes in the vast area is still being assessed. With more severe weather in the forecast this week, tornadoes are still an expectation throughout Tornado Alley.
