Severe Thunderstorms and Rain to the South, Wintry Mix and Snow in North

The eastern half of the US will be dealing with some form of weather today ranging from snow, to a wintry mix, to rain and thunderstorms – here are the latest forecasts and weather news around the country today.

Heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms in South and East

Soaking rain will spread over most of the southern US today, with strong thunderstorms for Florida and the potential of severe weather from Miami to the Keys.

Then it will also extend from the South into some eastern in northeastern portions of the country as far north as Massachusetts.

Wintry mix over a large portion of US today

Mixed precipitation will cover a wide swath of the upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley regions extending from Minnesota to the north to northern Arkansas to the south, as well as to Pennsylvania and the Virginias to the east, and North Carolina and Tennessee to the south.

Northern states such as Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island our also forecast to experience a wintry mix.

Snow to the New England states

Snow is forecast for portions of northern and eastern Pennsylvania, all of New York, Vermont, northern New Hampshire, and Northern Maine.

Portland, Oregon has had its highest rainfall total for January in 3 years.

Washington: Concerns of flooding and potential weekend snow.

Denver: Temps could hit 70 this weekend, with more snow next week.

Revised severe weather threat for Super Bowl weekend

A risk of severe weather still exists for Super Bowl weekend, but the revised forecast reflects a lower risk.

The storm risk extends from Fort Lauderdale all the way south to Key West and west to Marco Island. Storms building in the Gulf of Mexico will kick off on Friday and continue through Saturday.

The highest potential for severe weather exists early Saturday through mid-day.

Storms are expected to move out by Sunday, with a dry out occurring. Temperatures in Miami on game day are forecast for a high near 70 degrees, dropping to 65 degrees by kickoff at 6:30 PM.
