Julie Dimperio Holowach was killed by a great white shark bite, about 20 feet or so offshore, the Maine Department of Marine Resources reported.

Authorities in Maine said the woman killed in a rare shark attack off the state’s coast, was a 63-year-old resident of New York City and a recently retired fashion executive.

Humans are more likely to be killed by lightning or a tornado than a shark bite, and people at the beach are more likely to die from rip currents.

Marine patrol said Julie was swimming off the shore of Bailey Island when she was bitten. Two kayakers helped get her to shore and EMT’s supplied further assistance, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The kayakers were on the shore when one of them saw something breach the water and realized something was horribly wrong.

Fatal Shark Attacks are extremely rare. Since 1900, only 11 people in the U.S. have been killed by unprovoked great whites.
