Now that we’re officially heading into flu season, it’s the perfect time to focus on boosting your immune system. While no supplement or food will cure a disease or keep you 100% safe from a virus, there are certain foods that can work to keep your body strong. In fact, countless foods that we all try to incorporate into our daily diet are considered immune boosters. If you’re looking to improve your diet and take steps to stay healthy this winter, here are foods that will help boost your immune system.

Button Mushrooms

Button mushrooms are high in mineral selenium and B vitamins. If your body is low on selenium you may be more likely to contract the flu.

Citrus Fruits

Vitamin C, vitamin C, vitamin C! Citrus fruits are packed with vitamin C, which increases the production of white blood cells, which are in turn used to fight off infections. Here are some citrus fruits that you should be eating (or drinking):
  • Oranges
  • Limes
  • Lemons
  • Tangerines
  • Grapefruit

Red Bell Peppers

We’ve already established citrus fruits are packed with vitamin C, but it turns out red bell peppers actually have three times as much vitamin C as an orange! Add this vegetable to your salads or eat them by themselves as a mid-day snack.

Watermelon

Watermelon is full of an antioxidant called glutathione, which strengthens the immune system and helps to fight off infection. In order to really get as many vitamins from watermelon as possible, make sure to eat close to the rind.

Yogurt

Yogurt has active cultures, which means it can help your body fight off diseases. Pick up some plain yogurt and have it in the morning with some blueberries and a little bit of honey. Yogurt is also packed with vitamin D, which helps regulate the immune system. All in all, this food should definitely be in your refrigerator this winter.

Garlic

Garlic has been known for centuries to fight a variety of infections. In fact, many people believe it’s good for your heart, but it also contains allicin, which is an immune-boosting property.

Tea

Whether you prefer green or black, tea is full of antioxidants and vitamins that are great for your body. They contain polyphenols and flavonoids, which help to fight diseases. Try to incorporate a cup of tea into your day, but make sure to avoid caffeinated teas at night!
